Sedation Dentistry For safe and successful sedation dentistry, you need to be sure you visit a good dentist with an excellent reputation and broad experience. With sedation dentistry, medication is used to help patients relax throughout their dental procedure, and these medications can be used at various strengths depending on your particular need for sedation.

There are typically three sedation levels used in sedation dentistry. These include:

Minimal Sedation: Relaxed, but awake, you will typically receive very minimal sedation for smaller procedures or treatments such as teeth cleanings, exams and more. Laughing gas is a common medication used for minimal sedation and is one of the easiest to administer. You will stay awake throughout your treatment and will often be able to drive yourself home after a short recovery time.

Moderate Sedation: Whether you ingest medication orally or via an IV is up to you and your dentist, but a good dentist will typically recommend oral sedation for those who wish to be moderately sedated for their dental procedures. This is because oral sedatives will relax the patient enough to keep them comfortable throughout the procedure, but will not necessarily put them to sleep. An IV is used in instances where the dentist would like to adjust the level of sedation throughout the procedure and is typically advised in instances where the dental treatment is time consuming.

Deep Sedation: Essentially, this form of sedation is general anesthesia and will make you go into a deep sleep during your procedure. Normally used for more extreme oral surgery procedures, deep sedation can be effective at eliminating anxiety and allowing the patient to have a virtually pain-free experience.

A good dentist will always advise against sedation dentistry whenever possible, because sedatives can be dangerous when not utilized properly. Luckily, your team at Dental Associates works hard to provide a calm and relaxing experience for our patients.
