What Is Tooth Removal Surgery?

A tooth extraction is a dental procedure that requires the dentist to separate the tooth from the ligaments that connect it to the jawbone. These ligaments are called periodontal ligaments. While getting a tooth pulled sounds a little scary, it is a commonly performed procedure that will result in a healthier mouth.

Why Does The Dentist Want To Pull My Teeth?

While many people would rather avoid having a tooth pulled, there are several instances where it is better to take a badly damaged or infected tooth out of the mouth. These situations include:

Broken or Cracked Teeth

When this happens, the permanent tooth underneath becomes stuck. Having the baby tooth pulled by the dentist will allow the permanent tooth to grow in.

Crowded Teeth

Once the permanent teeth have started to grow in, many patients discover that there isn’t enough room for all of their teeth. This leads to the teeth growing out of alignment and can cause many serious dental issues in the future. Patients experiencing this issue are usually referred to an orthodontist for braces or other treatments. Before those treatments begin, the dentist may perform a tooth extraction.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are an extra set of molars that generally start to form in the young adult years. Patients often do not have enough room in their mouths for these extra teeth. This often leads to impacted wisdom teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth become trapped under the teeth and gums. This can cause damage to already existing teeth and may also damage the jawbone. Dental extractions are highly recommended when a patient has impacted wisdom teeth.

What Can I Expect After My Extraction Procedure?

What Can I Expect During the Tooth Extraction Healing Process?

If your procedure was a fairly simple one, you will probably be back to normal within two days. More complicated surgeries may require a lengthier healing time.
