How Can You Get Braces?

During your consultation, you can expect the dentist to thoroughly examine your teeth and determine how you can benefit from orthodontic treatment. To better design your treatment plan, your dentist may take x-rays of your mouth and make a mold of your teeth to determine what needs to be done in order to straighten your teeth.

Getting Braces Overview

The process of getting braces is very similar for both metal and ceramic. To prepare the surface of your teeth, they will first be cleaned and then dried. Then, your dentist or orthodontist will apply a special glue to your teeth to hold the brackets in place. After attaching the brackets to your teeth, archwires are placed inside the brackets, which are then secured with elastic bands.

Which Type of Braces Is Right for Me?

Ceramic braces are very similar, although the brackets are typically clear or white in color to help them blend into your teeth without being noticeable.

How Long Is the Process for Getting Braces?

It takes about one to two hours to get your braces put on. While the procedure itself does not hurt, it’s normal to experience mouth soreness for about a week afterwards. We recommend taking an over-the-counter pain reliever to relieve any discomfort, but you should contact our office if you’re still experiencing pain after one week. Typically, most people wear their braces for approximately one to two years.

How Long Will I Need to Wear a Retainer?

It usually only takes about an hour to have your braces removed. During this time, your dentist or orthodontist will also recommend that you wear a retainer to prevent your teeth from moving out of position. Most patients wear their retainer overnight, and with consistent use over several years, you can help stabilize your teeth in their new position.
